Monastero Sant’Andrea, beating heart of spirituality

Quietly nestled in the tranquil and timeless magnificence of the Umbrian hills, Hotel Monastero Sant’Andrea is more than a place to stay: it is a venue full of evocative appeal. Here, in the very heart of Assisi and facing the Basilica of Saint Francis, days are plunged into a state of profound and regenerating peace. Once run by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of the Gesù Bambino (Infant Jesus), whose mission is to “be servants of the people”, the hotel fully retains the distinctive spirit of warm hospitality and authenticity that makes it so special.

Its uniqueness lies in the elements that reflect the importance of the location: the olive grove – among whose majestic branches guests can glimpse the pristine white stones of the Basilica – together with the rare plant species, the fresco of the twelve apostles (a precious masterpiece of the Giotto school of painting) or the chapel (available for religious functions). Hotel Monastero offers the perfect setting for pilgrims, families, groups and solo travelers who long for spiritual experiences surrounded by the history of one of the world’s most significant Christian sites.

Basilica of Santa Chiara

Located at the foot of Assisi, this majestic basilica houses the Porziuncola, the small church where San Francesco founded his eponymous order. The significance of this sacred place mirrors its rich history: following a vision he had in 1216, Francesco received the “Porziuncola Indulgence” from Jesus. Every year countless Catholic pilgrims converge here to celebrate the Feast of Pardon and pass through the ‘door to eternal life’, in quest of forgiveness and peace.

Church of Santa Maria Maggiore

The first cathedral of Assisi is also known as the sanctuary of the ‘stripping’, as it stands where San Francesco is believed to have stripped naked in the presence of the bishop of Assisi, renouncing his own earthly belongings and riches. The church’s fame resonates far beyond national borders, also due to the remains of Carlo Acutis, a young boy from Milan who passed away at the age of 15 from leukemia and was beatified on October 10th, 2010, in the Basilica.

Forest of San Francesco

From the upper section of the Basilica visitors can follow a path that cuts through a 64-hectare natural area, fully restored in 2008. This trail through brooms, maple and oak trees, olive groves and ruins offers a profound journey into history and spirituality.

Eremo delle Carceri

A few kilometers from the historic center of Assisi, immersed in the silence of the woods of Mount Subasio, the Eremo delle Carceri (Hermitage of the Prisons) is a place of deep meditation, where San Francesco and his followers retreated to pray.
